Spelling notebook
Listen, remember, write
Ten different words. Check each attempt once, then continue when ready.
Dictation checks letters and ignores pronunciation marks. Hamza, ة, ه, ى and ي remain distinct.
Revealing a word makes this attempt assisted, even if you hide it again.
This compares your answer with your reference text; it does not proofread the reference.
Spaces and decorative tatweel are normalized. Letter forms remain distinct.
Spelling notes
Initial hamza
Hamzat al-wasl is pronounced when starting speech and omitted in connected speech. Hamzat al-qat stays pronounced. Learn the written forms with the word.
اِسْم · اُكْتُبْ · أَكَلَ · إِحْسَان
SourcesMiddle hamza
A middle hamza usually depends on its vowel and the preceding vowel. There are exceptions and contextual changes; do not apply the final-hamza rule to every middle hamza.
بِئْر · سُؤَال · رَأْس · قِرَاءَة
SourcesFinal hamza
A final hamza is generally written according to the preceding sound: kasra with ئ, damma with ؤ, fatha with أ, and a preceding unvowelled sound with ء. Attached endings can change its position.
شَاطِئ · لُؤْلُؤ · قَرَأَ · جُزْء
SourcesTaa and haa
Taa marbuta (ة) is pronounced as haa when pausing, but it remains ة in writing. Open taa (ت) stays a t sound when pausing. Haa (ه) is a different letter.
مَدْرَسَة · بَيْت · وَجْه
SourcesFinal alif
A final long a sound may be written ا or ى. These are different from the dotted ya (ي). Learn the spelling with the word rather than replacing every final alif.
عَصَا · فَتَى · هُدَى · مُسْتَشْفَى
SourcesSun and moon letters
The lām of al- assimilates before a sun letter and is pronounced before a moon letter. The written ل remains in both. The moon word itself is a moon-letter example.
